WHY IT HAPPENS: Because we live in Southern California, coping with hard water is a way of life. Our water supplies contain large amounts of calcium and lime, naturally dissolved in the water. You have probably noticed when water dries, a mineral residue is left on dishes, glass and pool tile. Evaporation is extreme, due to high temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions. Each time water is added to the pool, the concentration of minerals increases as the volume of water stays the same. Wind and swimmers agitate the water and cause it to splash on the tile. Evaporation is rapid and a small amount of mineral sticks to the tile. Eventually you notice a white residue on the tile. Routine maintenance cannot prevent this build up. The best solution is to drain the water from your pool every two to three years. There are no chemicals that can lower the hardness or reduce the total dissolved solids in the water. We regularly check the water in our customer’s pools in order to advise them when their pool should be drained and refilled.
